Forest

Diu boasts 519 hac. of forest area, featuring Casurina, Procofis, and Acasia plantations along its 21 km coastline. Hokka Trees add greenery, protect from sea breeze, and enhance tourism and ecological balance.

The total area under forest is 519 hac. of which 162 hac. are in Vanakbara Village, 355 hac. in Bucharwada Village and 2 hac. in Ghoghla. The area under forest is basically the area under man-made forest of Casurina Equisetifolia, Procofis Fuliflora and Acasia Tortolis plantation near the sea coast. These plantations along the coastal line has become an attraction for the fast developing Tourism activity in Diu. This also help to maintain the ecological balance of the Island. One of the very interesting features observed in Diu is the huge and thick cultivation of branching Hyphonea Indica palm trees locally known as Hokka Trees all along the coast as well as in the villages. This thick and high growth of very old plantation of rare species from the Portuguese time has, not only maintained the greenery of the entire island, but has significantly protected the island from the salty sea breeze apart from protecting the ecology and environment within the island. This canopy has thus entailed in maintenance of formidable local weather conditions for agro-horticultural development, besides attracting tourists to this green island.
